Source – Office of the Deputy Prime Minister now called Department for Communities and Local Government
What does it mean to the customer?
-
The IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671) is a safety standard there to help ensure such things as inappropriate wiring, overloaded circuits and poor workmanship do not make circuits potentially dangerous and where found are put right.
-
Electrical Installers are now required to prove (by using the correct testing procedures) that any work done is safe and meets the necessary building regulations. They are required to provide you with a certificate for any work they do.
-
When you come to sell your property, you need evidence (Building Control Certificates) that any installation carried out after 1 January 2005 complies with the new Building Regulations. Failure to comply could, not only make it difficult for you to sell your house, but could also be potentially dangerous.
How does the customer prove compliance?
-
Customer applies for Building Control Certificates via the Local Authority. (You will still need to use the services of an electrician to prove the safety of the circuits)
Or
-
By using a Part P approved domestic electrical installer, you will automatically a) receive an Electrical Installation Works Certificate and b) the local authorities Building Control will be notified on your behalf and subsequently supply the customer with a certificate of compliance with the Building Regulations.
NICEIC Insurance Back Warranty - "If for any reason work is found not to be in compliance with the Building Regulations and in the event that an NICEIC company ceases to trade, NICEIC will cover the cost of further work to satisfy standards".
